Who are we?

The Jane Finch Community Research Partnership was created in 2016 as a result of ongoing engagement between members of the Jane Finch community and York University faculty and librarians. Our goal is to improve research relationships that have existed and continue to exist between the Black Creek/Jane Finch community, York University, and other academic institutions. Our work has been focused on creating a community procedure for reviewing and approving research in the Jane Finch community, establishing a Jane Finch Research Collection to make research results more readily accessible for Community members, and developing informational resources for researchers looking to conduct research in the community.

The Jane Finch Community Research partnership is made up of community residents, non-profit organizations, and York University partners.

Our specific goals are :

  1. To establish a community ethics review process centred around the Jane-Finch Community Research Group,  a community-based group now being established to review, approve and support research proposals from those looking to conduct research in the Jane-Finch Community.

  2. To develop educational resources for researchers looking to conduct research in the community. Currently, these include the document  “Principles for Conducting Research in the Jane-Finch Community” and an online course with 8 informational modules for research team members, ranging from background on the history of the Jane-Finch community to guidelines on authorship and accountability regarding community research participants.

  3. To establish the Jane-Finch Research Collection: an extensive open-access database containing easily-discoverable research about the community. We intend for this collection to be freely available to community members and researchers worldwide via an open-access website. It is being co-designed with community members, prioritizing their needs and perspectives.
